UC Celebrate One Year Anniversary of Preah Vihear

If you drive down Sihanouk Boulevard, you hear and see people singing and holding Cambodian flags.

They are all cheering for the one year anniversary of Preah Vihear.

On July 7, 2009 at 11:00 am students and faculty of UC joined the celebration. “Our students will sing a national song, Pung Savada Khmer, and there will be the beating of the drum,” stated Ms. Por Malis.

Ms. Chheng Sovannka, UC Student Senate President, explained to The Southeast Asia Weekly about a fundraising idea to assist soldiers stationed at the border. She says that “the fundraiser is part of the university project, but UCSS as well as other organizations at UC will spread information about fundraising opportunities to help our soldiers. The fundraiser can be anything.”

As The Southeast Asia Weekly states “Cambodia’s Preah Vihear temple was given world heritage status on July 7, 2008 in Quebec, Canada at the 32nd UNESCO meeting.”

“I am proud to be a Cambodian,” states Ms. Sovannka. This one year anniversary means so much too all the Cambodians. “It is a symbol of Cambodian position, a very special event for Cambodian citizens.”

“Over 20 UC students sang the national song. It was even amazing to see our President, H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn and H.E. Samraing Kamsan joins in too,” states Ms. Sovannka.

Our celebration marks the first anniversary of Preah Vihear’s addition to the World Heritage Site List.
